As bees are living breathing animals they don’t sit on a shelf like most products you might buy. Each colony is cared for and raised, and therefore the system for buying bees is you go on a waitlist and when the bees are ready, we contact you. We sell nucleus hives of bees in spring and summer when the bee colony is built up and ready for sale.
The nucleus hive is mini hive of five frames. Our nucleus hives contain five full depth Langstroth frames of brood, pollen and honey with a new young mated and marked queen. All the nucleus equipment is brand new, both the box and frames eliminating the risk of disease transfer.
Bees in nucleus hives have already built-up food stores and an established queen so are ready to expand into your full-size hive.
The hive the nucleus come in is a coreflute box. The coreflute box is suitable for transport of the bees. It is a temporary box for short term housing of the bees. The picture on this page is not a coreflute box but a wooden box- I will update picture soon. A nucleus hive is $360.
Delivery or Pick Up
If you live within the Blue Mountains area and would like the nucleus hive to be delivered with a one-hour introduction lesson, this can be arranged. During the introduction lesson, we will look at your hive set-up, double check it is in the right place and set up correctly, light a smoker together, transfer the bees across to your hive, having a quick look at the different stages of the bee’s lifecycle and identifying the different castes of bees (queen, workers and drones if present) and you have the opportunity to ask any questions you might have. If you choose to pick up the bees, it will be from Katoomba area.
